How it got it's name
When the battle occurred early in the morning the Confederate troops attacked near a church called Shiloh.
The Union however referred to this as the Battle of Pittsburg Landing because that was the name of the docks where they had unloaded their soldiers at the Tennessee River.

The battle of Shiloh was won by the Union
Confederate leader . Albert Johnston died after
being shot in the back of the knee hitting a large artery.
Confederate troops used obsolete weaponry such as
flintlock and hunting rifles. The Confederates assembled 66 artillery
guns to fire into the "Hornets Nest". This battery, referred to as Ruggles Battery, was the largest single use of artillery on North America at that time. This battle included the
highest ranking Confederate General, the Governor of Tennessee and a previous
Vice-President of the USA. Principal Commanders: Maj. Gen. Ulysses S.
Grant and Maj. Gen. Don Carlos Buell , Gen. Albert Sidney Johnston , and Gen.
P.G.T. Beauregard . Their was an estimated of about 23,746 total Casualties.

The Drummer boy of Shiloh
John Clem was a young boy who ran away from his Newark home in Ohio at the
age of 10 John Clem tried to join the Union Army but was rejected due to his young age .
the young boy joined with the 22nd Michigan Volunteer Infantry until he was adopted as
its mascot and drummer. He was supplied with a small rifle and a uniform .
Clem appeared at the Battle of Shiloh where a bullet destroyed his drum. People got hold of
his story known as the "Drummer Boy of Shiloh." Clem was also known at the Battle of Chickamauga on September of 1863. on the fighting grounds , 3 bullets passed through his little drummer boy cap without doing him any damage to any part of his body. Clem escaped capture when he killed a Confederate soldier who told him to stop . People now know him as "The Drummer Boy of Chickamauga." sadly a month later Clem was captured by Confederate when he was serving as train guard. he was eventually released but not before Confederate soldiers held him hostage for evidence that the Union was desperate they would consider applying young children to its fight. Clem was rewarded to the rank of Sergeant and assigned to the headquarters of the Army of the Cumberland. Clem abandon the Army in 1864 and applied it again in 1871 he became 2nd Lieutenant. Clem rose in rank to brigadier general becoming an Assistant Quartermaster of General of the United States Army in 1903. He retired from the Army in 1915 he died at age 85 in 1937. He is now buried in Arlington National Cemetery.
